What awaits you at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Vienna
Master's students at the Faculty meet a vibrant research community with many opportunities open to them. This can be challenging for some, as a solid base knowledge in physics, a high level of independence, and a strong intellectual drive are basic conditions to successfully advance through their studies.
We invite you to carefully go through the points below as a self-assessment to help you make the life-changing decision of joining us in Vienna!

A distinctive strength of the Physics Master’s program at the University of Vienna is the chance to focus early on one of the Faculty’s many active research areas. To make the most of this opportunity, incoming students should bring a strong foundation from their Bachelor’s studies. If you have excelled in mathematics, core physics subjects, and the methodological approaches that align with your interests, you will quickly feel at home in the Faculty’s vibrant research environment.
During your studies, you’ll become part of a dynamic research group, working side by side with dedicated researchers who are pushing the boundaries of knowledge. You will gain valuable hands-on experience, develop new skills, and play an active role in ongoing investigations. To thrive in this environment, you’ll need to collaborate effectively, communicate clearly, and approach challenges with independence and curiosity.
Graduates of the Master’s programme in Physics are equipped not only with advanced subject knowledge but also with the methodological and research-oriented competencies required for independent scientific work.
They are thus well prepared for doctoral programmes (PhD) or employment in research-intensive roles (university research, non-university institutes, high-tech industry R&D). Because of the strong research infrastructure at the University of Vienna, the transition to doctoral studies is smoother: you will already have made contacts, gained experience, and understood how research groups operate.
